The political arithmetic of the state has gone haywire with entry of Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP. The party is a strong contender in the Assembly elections, with some of the opinion polls even predicting it to form the government. Major poll-analysis firms have come up with divergent views. The HuffPost-CVoter survey of February 2017 predicted 11 seats for BJP-SAD alliance, while it predicted Congress a distant second with 43 seats, and Aam Aadmi Party forming government with 90 seats.  Punjab, which went to the polls on February 4, has emerged as much of a high-stake elections for BJP and Congress as Uttar Pradesh. For the first time, the state has seen the entry of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which, going by its past records could be a dangerous addition for the two conventional players. Except for ABP-Lokniti poll,  none of the agency have expected SAD-BJP government returning to power. An average of all pollsters predict a convincing AAP victory with 77 seats, while it sets Congress as a distant third with 77 seats, and pushes SAD-BJP alliance on mere 14 seat.

How it might change in 2017:

Axis My India Exit polls predict 42-51 seats for the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party while Congress remains in a clear lead with 62-71 seats. Meanwhile, the BJP -SAD remains with 4-7 seats. Other candidates might win 0-2 seats.

Vote shares: The India Today-Axis My India Exit Polls state that Congress is to win 36% of the vote share, while the AAP comes a close second with 34%.

According to the India Today-Axis My India Exit Polls, Congress may be coming to power in Punjab after 10 long years. “Both Akali & BJP appealed to people to vote for Congress as they don’t want us to come to power in Punjab”, says Raghav Chadha

According to the News18 Gramener Projections, the Aam Aadmi Party is predicted to win 57 seats, while the Congress just trails by 4 with 53 of its own. According to the predictions, AAP remains just 2 seats away from having a complete majority. Meanwhile, the ruling BJP SAD alliance can only manage 7 seats, according to the projections.

According to the Today’s Chanakya Exit Polls, the ruling SAD-BJP alliance, led by Prakash Singh Badal will win just 9 seats. Meanwhile, both the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party will be sharing 54 seats each. According to the Chanakya Exit Polls, no single party will win an absolute majority in the state.
The MRC Exit Polls predict a sad condition for the ruling SAD-BJP alliance with just 7 seats. There is a tough fight expected between the Indian National Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party are expected to share 55 seats each.
It looks like the state of Punjab is going to have a hung assembly.

The C-Voter Exit Polls predicts an AAP victory with a clear majority with 59-67 votes, while the Congress managing 41-49 votes. The ruling BJP SAD alliance remains at the bottom with a prediction of 5-13 seats.

The state has suffered from endemic drug problem over the past decade and unemployment. These were the core issues on which Congress and AAP tried to corner the Shiromani Akali Dal. Given the fact that it is not going to be two-cornered elections this time, the poll pundits are keenly tracking Punjab.

EXIT POLLS 2017: PUNJAB (Total seats 117)
In Punjab the SAD-BJP ruling party is set to get a drubbing. According to the exit polls, the Congress and AAP are neck and neck. The India Today exit poll suggests AAP will win 42-51 seats, Congress will win 62-71, SAD+ will win 4-7, others will get 0-2. The ABP News poll forecasts AAP will win 36-46 seats, Congress will win 46 to 56 seats, SAD+ 19-27 and otehrs 0-4. The News 24 poll says AAP will win 54 (+/-9), Congress 54 (+/-9) , and SAD+ 9 (+/-5). The India TV poll predicts AAP will win 59-67 seats, Congress will win 41-49 and SAD+ will win 5-13, others will get 0-3.

The 2012 elections in Punjab reversed the trend of electoral politics by beating anti-incumbency pattern in the state. Initially, with the formation of Manpreet Singh Badal-led Sanja Morcha (Combined Group), it seemed that the state may witness a triangular fight in the state. However, Sanja Morcha came up with a poor performance, making it a bipolar contest between conventional players i.e. SAD-BJP alliance and the Congress.

On the other hand, Congress apparently failed to take advantage of the decline in popularity of the ruling alliance. It was said that the alliance mostly relied upon anti-incumbency historic formula, waiting its term to form the next government in the state. SAD-BJP alliance, in spite of the marginal decline in its vote share, bagged 22 seats more than their rival Congress Party, though getting only a margin lead of 1.77 percent in terms of vote share

In the 2012 Assembly elections, the state witnessed a direct contest between Congress and SAD-BJP coalition. The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal – Bharatiya Janata Party alliance led by Parkash Singh Badal won the elections by securing 68 out of 117 seats. The SAD won 56 seats, whereas BJP secured 12 seats out of 24 it contested. Indian National Congress, under the leadership of former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, won 46 seats. However, the contest has been interesting in 2017 with the participation of a new entrant AAP, which has fielded as many as 111 candidates.
