Punjab Assembly Election Results Leads 2017: In an amazing show of strength by the Maharaja of Patiala Capt Amarinder Singh, the beleaguered Congress Party has been saved from total humiliation at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as results to assembly elections held in five states recently started trickling in since morning. From Goa, Uttarakhand, to Uttar Pradesh the results painted almost all state maps in saffron colour and to an extent even in Manipur. It was total humiliation all round for the Congress for which its Vice President Rahul Gandhi had campaigned vigorously in all these states but he did not manage to create the the kind of electrifying effect that Narendra Modi could. In fact, it was a total washout wherever Gandhi went to campaign. While Gandhi’s popularity hit its nadir, Capt Amarinder Singh managed to revive the Congress party in Punjab at least. The Congress is leading in 77 seats, while AAP is leading in 22 and the SAD-BJP alliance is in third place at 18. Clearly, the Congress party is going to muscle out the SAD-BJP ruling party and the current Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal from power. Basking in the glow of a victory that was expected in Punjab, but one which was not confirmed till today by the Election Commission counting as the Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was expected to be neck and neck with Congress, an eventuality that did not actually transpire, Capt Amarinder Singh addressed the gathered media like a patriarch and in his clipped accent proceeded to tear the rival upstart AAP party apart; he also seemed to cut others in his own party, who may have had dreams of snatching power from him, down to size.
Capt Amarinder, with his supporters gathered behind him in a dsiciplined manner started off by praising the people for exercising their choice. He said, “Punjab voters are very intelligent. They have distinguished well between good and bad. I thank the people of Punjab for putting their faith in the Congress party.”
Having done with the niceties, and on being prompted by the gathered mediamen on the issue of Deputy chief ministership for the ebullient former Team India cricketer and former BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, a clearly displeased Capt Amarinder quickly seemed to shut off this possibility and said that no such proposal was on the table. It had been reported, before the election campaigns had started that Capt Amarinder was not really keen on having the former BJP man in the Congress team, but he was overridden by the diktat from the Congress high command especially Rahul Gandhi.
But keeping all his options open, Amarinder made sure that he praised the people who matter in the party. He has thanked Rahul Gandhi for playing a positive role in ensuring a Congress win in Punjab.
Captain Amarinder Singh also took a dig at his rival Arvind Kejriwal. Since AAP did not manage to win the kind of seats, in numbers, that were expected of it, with some actually saying in days leading up to counting day that Punjab will be ruled by an AAP man, Captain Amarinder Singh dismissed the Delhi chief minister by saying, “He is a summer storm and he is gone.”

Capt Amarinder concluded the meet by saying that the pending devisions in the wake of the win will be taken tomorrow at the Congress Legislative Party meeting that has been scheduled to take place at 2 pm. Captain Amarinder is the prospective chief ministerial candidate of the Congress in Punjab.
Also speaking earlier in the morning after he won from his Amritsar (East) constituency, Sidhu had won and in his charecteristic loud manner said, “This is the revival of Congress. It will take strength from this beginning in Punjab and spread.” He also took a dig at his SAD rivals and said that “Punjab results are a big defeat of Akali Dal’s arrogance.”
