One of the major problems that have been stated to be reasons for the protests against Sidhu's elevation within the party was that the state would end up with two leaders of the same community from Patiala in the top two spots.
With the Congress, all set to form a government in Punjab, and Captain Amarinder Singh slated to take the oath as the Chief Minister, the focus has shifted to the position of the Deputy CM. It must be remembered that there is no second in command to Captain Amarinder Singh and a few names, hence, have popped up. One such name is that of Manpreet Singh Badal. He was the former Finance Minister in the Badal government and is known to have prepared the manifesto for the Punjab polls. He is also known to have a good relationship with Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. The other big name that is being thrown up in the air is that of cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Sidhu’s supporters are confident about the leader taking over the post of the Deputy CM. However, many senior Congress leaders remain to wait to see if the top brass of the party just hands over the position of Captain Amarinder Singh’s first mate to the late entrant Sidhu. Sidhu has worked for the party for just over a fortnight, according to to the IE, and the Congress leaders are reported to be protesting against his elevation to the post of Deputy CM.
One of the major problems that have been stated to be reasons for the protests against Sidhu’s elevation within the party was that the state would end up with two leaders of the same community from Patiala in the top two spots. A senior leader told IE that he would oppose the move with all his might as the Congress had thrived on the Dailt and Hindu vote bank to win the elections and should consider a Hindu or a Dalit for the post. Although, Sidhu does have a lack of competition for the post. Senior leaders who could claim the right to the post, such as former CM, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and former CLP leader Sunil Jakhar have lost in the polls, Former party president from Punjab, Partap Singh Bajwa is not that relevant and the state VP Lal Singh did not even get a ticket. So, in all likeliness, Navjot Singh Sidhu might be the only man fit for the job.
