Meerut Municipal Corporation Nagar Nigam elections result 2017: BSP’s Sunita Verma wins mayor seat, full List of ward-wise winners

More than 11 lakh voters in the district had to cast their votes to elect Mayor, 15 chairman of two Nagar Palika and 13 Nagar Panchayats along with 316 corporators in different wards of the district including 90 wards of the Nagar Nigam. The main candidates in the fray on this reserved seat for woman are Kanta Kardam of BJP, Sunita Verma of BSP, Mamta Sood of Congress and Deepu Manothia of SP.

BJP won a comprehensive victory in the UP Civic Polls. The party managed to bag 14 out of 16 mayoral seats.  BSP candidate Sunita Verma has won a tough battle with BJP candidate Kanta Kardam for the mayoral post. Kardam is a former lawmaker and a Jatav Dalit and currently the state vice president of the party. BSP has emerged as a strong opposition to BJP in urban local bodies given its poor performance in UP assembly and Lok Sabha elections. However, BJP has maintained its grand show in the elections and continued from Yogi Adiyanath’s powerful victory in the assembly polls.

Polling for local bodies elections were held peacefully in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut. However, there were some incidents of protests due to faulty EVM machines or malfunctioning. There was 50 percent voters turn out in the urban areas whereas in the rural area’s voters turn-out was impressive 65percent. More than 11 lakh voters in the district had to cast their votes to elect Mayor, 15 chairman of two Nagar Palika and 13 Nagar Panchayats along with 316 corporators in different wards of the district including 90 wards of the Nagar Nigam. In 2012 civic polls of Meerut, BJP’s Harikant Ahluwalia won the mayoral post defeating Samajwadi Party-backed Rajeeq Ansari by a margin of 70,806 votes. Elections were held for 12 municipal corporations, 186 Nagar Palika Parishads and 388 Nagar Panchayats.
