The process of assembly elections in Manipur started today with the issuance of notification for the first phase in which 38 seats of the 60-member state assembly will go to polls on March 4. Contestants will file nominations until February 14, while they will be able to withdraw their candidature till February 18.The Election Commission had announced the two-phase elections in the state.
Meanwhile, the BJP, which recently formed the government in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, released its third list of candidates for the polls. The names in the list included Rajen Singh from Lamseng seat and K. Krishna Kumar Singh from Bishernpur constituency. Earlier, the national party had declared names of 27 more candidates for the polls.
Congress has already declared 60 names for the assembly polls. It is fielding Okram Ibobi Singh as its chief ministerial candidate. Counting of votes will take place on March 11.
CM O Ibobi Singh has led a Congress government in the state for the last 15 years. BJP is making a serious bid to capture power in the state for the first time. Some of the names in the list released by BJP so far are: The names of the candidates are Th Mohindro Singh (Khundrakpam seat), Indra Jeet Singh (Kshetrigao), W Jyotin (Thsngmeiband), Dr Dwijamani (Uripok), Y Khemchan (Singjamei), Kh Dingko (Sekmai), Subhaschandra (Naoriya Pakhanglakpa) Rameshwar would be the BJP candidate for Kakching seat, Th Ranbir (Jiribam), S S Olis (Chandel), Yanglet Haokip (Tengnoupal), Somi Awungshi (Phungyar), Somatai Shaiza Sword Vashum (Chingai), Paojalet Touthang (Saikul), R Yuh Jonathan Tao (Karong), Woba Joram (Mao), Nemcha Kipgen (Kangpoki), Haokholet Kipgen (Ssitu), Samuel Jendai (Tamenglon), Adim Pamei (Nungba), Dr L Fimate (Tipaikukh), Vungzagin Valte (Thanlon), TT Haokip (Henglep), V Hangkhanlian (Churachandpur), Paokholal Haokip (Saikot) and Chinlungthang Zou.
