Manipur Assembly Election Results 2017: BJP stakes claim to form government

Hours after electing N Biren Singh as its legislature part chief, the BJP met Governor Najma Heptullah and staiked claim to form government in the state.

Hours after electing N Biren Singh as its legislature part chief, the BJP met Governor Najma Heptullah and staiked claim to form government in the state. Speaking to media persons earlier, the newly elected leader thanked party president Amit Shah for the opportunity and expressed hope that his party would provide good governance to the people of the state.

In the meantime, the Congress hit out at the Governor for not been invited to form the government saying that being the single largest party it should have been given an first opportunity to form goevrnment in the state. Speaking to media, senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily said that as his party was only two seats short of majority, it should have been asked to form the government first. He also added that it was “incompetent” on the part of the governor.

The National People’s Party (NPP) had also claimed that it did not offer any support to the Congress. Speaking to media persons, PP leader Conrad Sangma said that the Congress’ letter to Governor claiming NPP support was “fake”. He also said that the sign in the letter was not of party president nor it was on official letter head. Sangma further added that party’s official letter with sign of MLAs supporting govt led by BJP has been submitted.

Hours after Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh was asked to resign by state Governor Najma Heptullah, the former changed his stand and decided to resign within 24 hours. He had refused to resign saying that the Congress has majority to form government. The state assembly has 60 seats. In the results declared on Saturday, Congress won most number of seats with 28, followed by the BJP with 21.
