BJP on Monday posted a thumping victory over Congress in both the assembly elections held in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. In Gujarat polls, BJP dominated over Congress from the beginning and claimed 99 seats out of 182 assembly seats with Congress registering victory in 77 seats and the rest of six seats were divided among others. In Himachal assembly polls too BJP assured victory by winning 35 seats out of 68 total seats with Congress acquiring only 21 in the updated result. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley post BJP’s win said that the party’s win in both the assembly polls confirms people’s trust in the development agenda and policies of the Modi-government. Jaitley via tweet said, “This victory reiterates pan India trust of people in the development agenda & policies of our government led by PM @narendramodi ji,”. Jaitley further commented that the election results were proof of the people trust in the incumbent government and also consolidated the fact that people were in for national development and not for negative change.
Jaitley’s comments were also echoed by other party members from Ravi Shankar Prasad, Yogi Adityanath, Sambit Patra to JP Nadda. Union IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad post victory while speaking to the media said that 70 per cent of the country is under BJP administration with 14 CMs and 19 governments which explains PM Modi’s desire for development being echoed by the people. He said, “people were with us even when Surat was called the epicentre of “Gabbar Singh Tax’ that says about the development we have brought in this country.” Yogi Adityanath has said that Congress’ usage of language and the way Kapil Sibal handled the Ram Janmabhoomi issue went against the party. He further said that people will never accept underdevelopment and a party whose thinking process is negative. Asserting BJP’s continuing reign in Gujarat he said, development is why BJP emerges as the choice of the people in every election.
Arun Jaitley also said that BJP has acquired 49 per cent votes, more than was predicted in exit polls. He said BJP’s victory is a sign that development for the people has won the party both elections. Jaitley taking a dig at the Congress said that the party must introspect on their loss and also must figure out what went wrong in Gujarat polls. Jaitley also pointed out that anti-incumbency was the reason behind Gujarat polls for which the people chose BJP for the sixth time in a row. On winning Himachal polls, Jaitley reasoned that the state has lost faith in Congress thus choosing BJP in assembly polls 2017.
Jaitley admitted that BJP suffered a big setback in Saurashtra, known as a BJP stronghold. It has 56 assembly seats out of which BJP could capture only 23 compared to 36 in the previous election. Congress, on the other hand, gained 15 seats in Saurashtra delivering a blow to the winning party. While speaking to media, Jaitley informed that MLAs will be taking decisions on the new leader in Gujarat and also praised the current Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani for his work and dedication leading to the party’s win in the assembly polls.
