The Himachal elections to 68 Assembly seats, held on November 9, was largely overshadowed by the high-profile campaign in Gujarat. But that has not dulled expectations on the ground as 337 candidates await their fate in a contest that witnessed a record 75.28 per cent turnout. The BJP and Congress are battling it out in a straight contest in Himachal Pradesh, with counting of votes for the 68-member Assembly set to begin at 8 am today. Congress and BJP has been alternating power in the state since 1990. Himachal Pradesh on Thursday recorded its highest polling in assembly elections with 74% of voters exercising their franchise, the election commission said.

There are 337 candidates in the fray today, including Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, who contested the polls from Arki in Solan district and former CM and BJP chief ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal, who contested from Sujanpur. rahul gandhi, Prem Kumar Dhumal, who contested from Sujanpur. While exit polls have predicted an easy win for the BJP in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress has rejected surveys.

A total of 11,283 VVPAT units were used in all the polling booths of the 68 constituencies out of which 297 were replaced, deputy election commissioner Sandeep Saxena had said in a press conference.
