Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh election results 2017: Addressing the press after BJP’s landslide victory in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, BJP President Amit Shah started by the thanking the people of both the states and dedicated the victory to the people. He said this victory marks the victory of development over polarisation and caste-politics. He added that India is ushering in a new era in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and it is his efforts and policies that have constantly won the trust of the people. He acknowledged that the number of seats secured by the BJP has dipped but added that BJP winning over even after an election campaign by the Congress which played caste politics is a big deal. He slammed the Congress saying that the party stooped to a new low during campaigning. He applauded Modi for initiating the politics of performance.
He pointed out that the BJP has registered a 10 per cent increase in the vote share in Congress and added that BJP forming the government in the state with a two-third majority is a matter of pride. Reiterating the fact that with the two wins, BJP led NDA is now ruling over 19 states, he said Modiji’s vision of ‘New India’ will be turned into reality. He refuted the fact that the Congress gave a tough fight saying that a margin of 8 per cent in the vote share reflects that the Congress is far behind. He also negated any impacts of the GST on the vote share of the BJP, saying, “We have won Surat where the business community is substantial.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his Twitter account to thank people for supporting BJP in the two states. He said, “I bow to the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for their affection and trust in BJP. I assure them that we will leave no stone unturned in furthering the development journey of these states and serve the people tirelessly.” In yet another tweet, he wrote, “Election results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh indicate a strong support for politics of good governance and development. I salute the hardworking BJP Karyakartas in these states for their hard work which has led to these impressive victories.”
Meanwhile, Congress President Rahul Gandhi has accepted defeat and thanked the people of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat for all the love that he received. He also congratulated the BJP on its victory. He said, The Congress party accepts the verdict of the people and congratulates the new governments in both states. I thank the people of Gujarat and Himachal with all my heart for the love they showed me.
He also took a coded jibe on BJP saying, “My Congress brothers and sisters, you have made me very proud. You are different than those you fought because you fought anger with dignity. You have demonstrated to everyone that the Congress’s greatest strength is its decency and courage.”
The day has brought a lot of cheer for the BJP as the saffron party has successfully driven away from the Congress from Himachal Pradesh and has secured its bastion Gujarat. However, there is no denying that the Congress has been able to dent the vote share of the BJP. Going by the latest trends, the BJP has fallen short of its 2012 tally of 115 seats in Gujarat. While in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP is sure to form the government with a thumping majority. The latest trends indicate BJP leading at 43 seats and the Congress securing just 21.
