With Congress heading towards another defeat in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, its newly elected president Rahul Gandhi has accepted the verdict of people and congratulated the new governments in both the states.

With Congress heading towards another defeat in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, its newly elected president Rahul Gandhi has accepted the verdict of people and congratulated the new governments in both the states. Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, the official handle of Rahul Gandhi wrote,”The Congress party accepts the verdict of the people and congratulates the new governments in both states. I thank the people of Gujarat and Himachal with all my heart for the love they showed me.” Rahul said that the Congress workers have fought the election with dignity which made him proud. In a series of tweet Gandhi wrote, “My Congress brothers and sisters, you have made me very proud. You are different than those you fought because you fought anger with dignity. You have demonstrated to everyone that the Congress’s greatest strength is its decency and courage.”

Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi stated that he was “satisfied, not disappointed” over the way the results had panned out On the other side, the BJP marching for a record sixth straight victory in Gujarat assembly polls, and was set to evict the Congress in Himachal Pradesh, tightening the party’s grip over the country’s politics with general elections only 18 months away. When asked if the Congress gave it a tough fight, Union minister Smriti Irani replied, “Jo jeeta wohi Sikandar (whoever wins is the king). The Congress took solace in the fact that it bettered its tally in Gujarat, the home turf of Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.

The assembly elections in the state have been no less than a war between the Congress and the ruling BJP. Congress’ newly appointed President Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi left no stone unturned to win over the people of the state during the election campaign. A common aspect of their election campaign was the fact that both the leaders addressed a number of rallies and visited many temples. BJP has (had) been in power in Gujarat since 1995. The opinion polls before the Gujarat election showed BJP securing the majority but with an extremely small margin. The Congress has been looking for a turnaround this time. Seen as the semi-final before 2019, General elections, the Gujarat elections were held in two phases on December 9 and 14.
