Even as the PM Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ride to a big victory in both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections as trends got cemented by mid-day, newly anointed Congress party President Raul Gandhi and his mother Sonia have kept a stunning silence. No reaction has come from the party at all. Earlier in the day, Congress was leading and many were predicting its win in Gujarat, but by mid-morning the trends did a big U-turn and the BJP started overtaking it and stayed ahead. It now emerges that the BJP is likely to get 105+ seats in Gujarat and 40+ in Himachal Pradesh.
Rahul Gandhi today left his residence after mid-day today but chose not to comment at all while exiting. However, the gains for Congress were big enough. While many in BJP were talking about a victory with a win in as many as 150 seats, others had said a more realistic 125, that the ultimate win is going to be near 100 is definitely a big dent in the saffron party. Also, what may come as a big positive for the Congress is that Punjab CM Amarinder Singh has taken the Congress to a huge win in the municipal elections just yesterday.
Nevertheless, the big surprise that Rahul Gandhi had promised in Gujarat has not materialised and will put question marks on his leadership skills and ability to take the Congress out of the rut that it finds itself in on the national stage.
