Within hours of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar being sworn-in as the new chief minister of Goa, Congress party senior leader and senior advocate Manu Abhishek Singhvi taunted him for his unseemly hurry to grab the post. Singhvi was tweeting at the end of a day full of drama in which the Supreme Court had refused to stop the swearing-in of Parrikar even though the BJP did not become the largest political party in the state in the wake of the elections. This happened because the BJP rushed to the Governor first with a list of 21 MLAs, including members of other parties who had pledged their support to the BJP. The saffron party had 13 MLAs in the 40 member assembly, but it managed to claw its way to 21 after other parties lent support – 3 MLAs from BGP, 3 GFP and 2 independents. Congress protests were duly rejected by concerned authorities and Parrikar assumed office. However, he will be required to take the floor test on 16th (Thursday) as ordered by the Supreme Court.
This has been interpreted as a victory by the Congress party as it is confident that the BJP will not be able to prove its majority there, paving the way for the election of a Congress party government in the state. With that in mind, Singhvi took to Twitter today and proceeded to post a number of tweets on the issue and took to taunt the new chief minister.
The fieriest of them all was the one where he predicted a very short reign at the top for Parrikar – based on his belief that Parrikar would not be able to survive the floor test. Singhvi tweeted, “So if you want to be a ‘do din ka sultan’ then you are welcome to do so.”
Singhvi added to that by posting, “Swearing in is a ministerial act, is of no constitutional signficance. WIll be nullifed in a floor test in 48 hours. Sc interfered significantly thru floor test on 16/3 & took 70% of sting out of gov partisan order. room 4manufacturing majorities reduced”
Not just constitutional impropriety, Sighvi is also accusing the BJP of going against the people’s mandate as it lost in polls very badly. He tweeted, “If BJP MLAs reduce frm 21 to 13, sitting CM loses 2 ctituencies, 6 cab ministers lose, then Mandate is clear against BJP & is subverted. Mandate of ppl is bedrock of democracy & demo is core of basic structure, hence bjp is subverting ppl’s mandate & violating basic structure.”
Singhvi then proceeded to counter allegations that the Congress had delayed in approaching the Governor. He posted, “Canards re Cong delay & inactivity in goa. Results 11/3 evening; CLP leader elected 730 pm 12/3; b4 he cld stake claim, gov appoints CM!”
He also indicated his disapproval regarding Parrikar willingly doing the wrong thing and said, “In view of uncertainty re outcome of fl test, a gentleman politician like Parrikar shd himself desist frm seeking swearing in for 48 hrs.”
