Water level in major reservoirs in country increases to 18 per cent

Water level in 91 major reservoirs across the country has increased to 18 per cent of their total capacity from 15 per cent last week, government said today.

Water level in 91 major reservoirs across the country has increased to 18 per cent of their total capacity from 15 per cent last week, government said today.

According to Union Water Resources Ministry, 28.208 billion cubic metre (BCM) of water was available in these reservoirs for the week ending on July 6.

For the week ending on June 30, the water stock available in these reservoirs was 23.94 BCM.

The current storage is 45 per cent short of the stock available during the corresponding period last year and 26 per cent less than the 10-year average levels for the same span of time, the ministry said in a statement.

The total capacity of these reservoirs is 157.799 BCM.

Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka have reported lower levels of water in major reservoirs compared to last year.

Rajasthan, Tripura and Andhra Pradesh have reported better storage vis-a-vis last year for the corresponding period.

The estimated water storage capacity of all reservoirs in the country is 253.388 BCM. Thirty seven of the major reservoirs have hydropower benefit with installed capacity of more than 60 MW.
