United States ambassador Richard Verma, the man best placed to explain and interpret the transformation of his country’s ties with India, will be the chief guest at the Express Adda in New Delhi Wednesday evening.

As head of one of the largest US missions in the world, Verma will speak on an array of shared interests and the road ahead, the map drawn by President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they visited each other’s country.

In conversation with Praveen Swami, National Editor, Strategic and International Affairs, The Indian Express, the Ambassador will also shine light on the political and social debates ahead of a crucial election year in the US.

Born to Indian-American parents, Ambassador Verma has had a career that has taken him to the private sector, the United States Air Force and a think tank. A former Assistant Secretary of State in the Obama administration, he was named envoy to New Delhi days before Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the United States last September.

He arrived in India weeks before Obama made his second visit as President — and the first US President as chief guest at the Republic Day parade — to redefine the relationship under the rubric

‘Chalein saath saath: Forward together we go’.

Since he has served in the administration, he has had a close working relationship with White House top officials, Chief of Staff Denis McDonough and National Security Advisor Susan Rice.

He was also a member of then US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s team — a Democratic Party contender for the Presidential elections.

Ambassador Verma’s wide experience and range of contacts is key to strengthening Indo-US relations as it unlocks opportunities across sectors — nuclear to defence, education to climate change, trade to people-to-people contact — and grapples with challenges.
