Uttar Pradesh government is planning to convert the jinxed Karchana power project in Allahabad into a UMPP.

The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to convert the jinxed Karchana power project in Allahabad into a UMPP.

The decision has received chief minister Akhilesh Yadav’s approval and the matter is now being examined before being sent to the Centre for its in-principal approval.

According to state’s energy department sources, since UP has already made arrangements for coal and water linkages for the project and has approximately 550 hectares available with it, it will go ahead and push the site for another UMPP project in the state.

“If we do get the Centre’s go-ahead, we will have to change the DPR, before bidding for the project,” an official said.

The R10,000-crore project, first mooted by the Mayawati government in 2007, was initially handed over to Jaypee Infratech for developing a 2×660 MW project, ran into rough weather due to land acquisition issues, ultimately leading to the group exiting the project.
