UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon has welcomed a high-level meeting between North and South Korea and encouraged both sides to use the resumed talks to pave the way for deescalating tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

“He encourages both sides to use the resumed discussions to pave the way for deescalating the situation and promoting peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” a statement issued by Ban’s spokesperson said.

The UN chief calls on the parties to redouble efforts to resolve differences through dialogue while refraining from taking any measure that is not conducive to dialogue.

He welcomed the high-level meeting between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea held yesterday, the statement said.

He further takes note of the agreement that the discussions will be resumed on Sunday, it added.

The UN chief had expressed deep concern over the rising tensions in the Korean Peninsula and had called on the parties to engage in dialogue to reduce tensions.

In rising tensions, North Korea has warned that it was prepared to risk “all-out war” with leader Kim Jong-Un putting his troops on combat readiness.

An exchange of artillery fire has put the South Korean army on maximum alert.
