States are on board for the Centre’s massive port-led development plan that includes setting up of new ports, enhancing port-efficiency and community upliftment in the coastal region, under the ambitious Sagarmala project, road transport and shipping minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday.

“There are 13 states and UTs which will directly benefit from the project. Chandra Babu Naidu and others congratulated the Centre and vowed to work together with us to make the project a success. They said it would be beneficial for their states as well,” Gadkari told reporters after the first meeting of the National Sagarmala Apex Committee in the Capital.

The minister said the development of ports was imperative for the industrial sector to grow further as it would reduce logistics costs. The sector contributes around 26% of the country’s GDP.
