A fisherman from Kerala on Wednesday sought stay on the construction of the Rs 6,600-crore Vizhinjam Harbour Project being developed by the Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ).

The project aims to convert a minor port near Thiruvananthapuram into a major transshipment hub. The port, when built, is expected to handle up to 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) container ships with a rated annual capacity of 10 lakh TEUs and entailing a total project cost of Rs 3,930 crore.

Stating there is gross urgency to hear the matter, the application filed by Anto Elias alleged that full scale illegal construction was going on in an economically fragile zone. The court put the matter for hearing on Monday.
