India cannot wait for incremental change. The need of the hour is “transformational change” which can come only with “drastic policy reform”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Niti Aayog today. Addressing a meeting with top Niti Aayog officials to finalise the 15-year vision document for accelerating all-round development of the country, the PM said that technology-driven governance was also the need of the hour as it would ensure “speed, transparency and accountability.”

“India cannot wait for incremental change. We need transformational change & that comes only with drastic policy reform,” Niti Aayog tweeted the PM as saying. The PM said the vision for the future should be  oriented towards “good governance, commitment to better lives” of citizens of India. Expressing confidence that Niti is working in the right direction, the PM said, “NITI should lead the way forward in fostering innovative, out of the box, thinking for the development of India”. The Prime Minister stressed on several areas that need transformation. These included technological innovation in agriculture, tourism and the use of natural resources for energy production. “India needs futuristic planning to develop its natural as well as human resources,” the  PM said.

During the meeting, Niti Aayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya explained the mistakes in previous planning efforts in the country and how to avoid them. “Good intentions of past efforts in planning have led to numerous unintended negative consequences,” Panagariya told the PM. On August 15, 2014, the PM had announced to replace the previous Planning Commission of India by the Niti Aayog.
