Patent office set to be rechristened

The Controller General of Patents Designs and Trademarks, which oversees the implementation of patents, designs and trademark laws, will soon be rechristened as the Controller General of Intellectual Property Rights, a senior government official said on Monday.

Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion secretary Ramesh Abhishek also said the government has recently hired 459 patent examiners to help clear massive backlog of IPR applications. The country is aiming to bring down the pendency levels to those of developed countries in 18 months.
