Prime Minister Narendra Modi who inducted 19 new ministers into his Cabinet on Tuesday has carried out major changes in the portfolios of his top ministers. In a major reshuffle in the Union Cabinet on Tuesday, Smriti Irani was moved out of the HRD ministry.

The shifting of Irani, whose two-year tenure in the Human Resources Development(HRD) Ministry was marked by controversies over dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide in Hyderabad and the JNU row, triggered speculation whether it was a tactical move to give a less important portfolio or to be left free to be the face of BJP campaign in UP Assembly polls due in 2017.

Detailed profile of Smriti Irani:

Smriti Zubin Irani is an Indian politician and a former Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) in the Narendra Modi government. She is the member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Irani is a former model and a television actress who worked for a considerable number of daily soaps (TV serials). She is also a producer and has an entertainment company by the name of Ugraya Entertainment.

Smriti Irani was born in a Delhi-based Punjabi middle class family and his father used to run a small courier company. She was appointed as the vice president of BJP’s Maharashtra youth wing in 2004. In 2004, she unsuccessfully contested against Congress senior leader and Union minister Kapil Sibal, from Chandni Chowk, Delhi. On June 24, 2010, she was appointed as All India President of the BJP Mahila Morcha. In August 2011, she was sworn in as the Member of Parliament (MP) from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha.
