Launching the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the cooking gas scheme will benefit 5 crore families till 2019. “We have shown how the petroleum sector is for the poor,” Modi said.

“This cooking gas connection will not only help reduce cost for each family, but will also help better the health of women,” Modi said at the launch of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. “The subsidy transfer will take place in the Jan Dhan account of the family’s woman head,” he said.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is an NDA government scheme that aims to provide 5 crore free cooking (LPG) connections to below-poverty-line families over the next three years. The ambitious Rs 8,000 crore scheme will partly be funded using the money saved from 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily giving up their subsidies through PM’s ‘Give It Up’ initiative.

Lauding people for participating in the ‘Give It Up’ campaign, PM Modi said, “I had appealed to people to give up LPG subsidy; it was a heartfelt plea. I hadn’t thought of a scheme or follow-up campaign, but the people of this country were great enough to give up their subsidies. I want to laud the over 1 crore families who gave up their LPG subsidies. Those subsidies that were given up have reached the households of poor people through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme.”

Talking about Labour Day, PM Modi said, “Today is Labour Day, and I bow to all labourers in the country. Labourers of the world unite used to be the mantra. Now, I want that labourers should unite the world.”

Slamming Opposition for playing politics over the scheme, PM said, “I pity those who try to find political reasons for launching the scheme in UP’s Ballia; people are insinuating that the move is aimed at winning elections in the state, however I recently launched many initiatives in states like Jharkhand and Haryana, those states are not poll bound. I chose Ballia for the launch of this scheme because it has the lowest percentage of households with cooking gas connections.”

“In the past governments have destroyed the will of poor people to fight against poverty. Fruits of development have to reach the eastern part of India and then we will gain strength in the fight against poverty. Connectivity in this region whether rail lines or bridges was ignored; these issues were ignored but I congratulate all local MPs for ensuring this changes,” Modi added.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme provides a financial support of Rs 1,600 for each LPG connection to the BPL households. The identification of eligible BPL families will be made in consultation with the state governments and the Union Territories.

Providing LPG connections to BPL households will ensure universal coverage of cooking gas in the country, claims the government. “This measure will empower women and protect their health. It will reduce drudgery and the time spent on cooking. It will also provide employment for rural youth in the supply chain of cooking gas,” the government says.
