SAUNI Yojana will make every Gujarati proud, says PM Modi in Jamnagar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the first phase of SAUNI (Saurashtra Narmada Avataran for Irrigation) project in which nearly 10 dams and reservoirs of Rajkot, Jamnagar and Morbi would be filled up with the water of Narmada river.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the first phase of SAUNI (Saurashtra Narmada Avataran for Irrigation) project in which nearly 10 dams and reservoirs of Rajkot, Jamnagar and Morbi would be filled up with the water of Narmada river. Modi will also address a massive gathering after the inaugural ceremony. Around 700 state transport buses and 200 private buses have been arranged that will ferry people to the inaugural ceremony. The state irrigation department has earmarked a budget worth around Rs 5 crore for the inauguration of phase-I of link-I of SAUNI, a project to fill up 115 dams of Saurashtra with Narmada water. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 12,000 crore and forms a part of Modi’s ambitious schemes.

According to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, “The phase-I of the project is complete which the Prime Minister will inaugurate. As many as 10 dams will be filled to the brim in the first phase.  “We plan to fill 115 dams of Saurashtra region. The four-phase project is expected to be completed before 2019.”

Ahead of the inauguration, Modi tweeted, “looking forward to being in Gujarat today for the launch of SAUNI Yojana. This scheme will truly benefit the people of Gujarat.” The government plans to transfer one MAFt of excess water to dams of Saurashtra, using existing canal networks and then laying a web of pipelines to fill dams that are located in the range of 300 to 500 kms from Sardar Sarovar dam.

Phase 1 work on Links II, III and IV is expected to be over by December 2016. The government has set the deadline of December 2019 for completing the entire project. Many parts of Saurashtra are prone to drought, and irrigation water is also a politically sensitive issue in this region.

Congress on Monday attacked Modi’s scheduled visit to Gujarat, calling it a mere ”lollipop” for farmers.’ Accusing him of making “false promises” ahead of every elections, senior Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela on August 29 claimed Modi was coming to inaugurate a project which is still incomplete and is being launched with an eye on next year’s Assembly polls.

“Modi is known to make false and deceiving promises keeping in mind the elections. Ahead of 2012 polls in Gujarat, Modi, as Gujarat Chief Minister, had launched SAUNI project. PM Modi had announced this project in 2012 while he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

 

Saruashtra, which comprises 11 districts, faces drought like situation often and has been reeling under severe water scarcity due to scanty rainfall in the last two years.
