Reiterating its opposition to laying of gas pipelines across farm lands, the Tamil Nadu government has asked the Centre to rescind the notification on GAIL gas pipeline passing through the state. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalalithaa said the proposed alignment of the gas pipelines would cause irreparable damage to Erode, Tirupur, Coimbatore, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem districts through which the Kochi-Koottanad-Mangaluru- Bengaluru gas pipeline would traverse.

Referring to the Supreme Court the ruling previous week against the state’s 2013 order asking GAIL to stop the project on its present alignment, she said the apex court had made it clear that Centre was the competent government on this matter.
