After conducting an online poll to decide the theme of Indian Railways’ new uniforms, the Railway Ministry has now launched a “nationwide poll” to get people to select the individual uniform styles of the railways staff. According to the Railway Ministry, out of the four themes that Ritu Beri had proposed, ‘The Vibrant Soul of India’ garnered the maximum votes, and now the designer has given the Indian Railways multiple options within that theme for different railway staff such as station manager, commercial clerks (male and female), guards, locomotive drivers, coolies, waiters, catering in-charge, housing-keeping etc.
On its Facebook page, the Railway Ministry has put up the various options and asked people to comment and vote for the uniform design they like. “The passengers will be given 2 to 5 options to choose from for dress codes of Indian Railways personnel including station Managers, chief ticketing examiner, supervisor reservation, in-charge AC coach, Housekeeping, Chief Catering In-charge, Waiter/Bearer/Server, Coolie/Porter, Locomotive Driver, all guards, Commercial clerk (Male) and Commercial Clerk (Female),” said the Railway Ministry post.

Ved Prakash, Director Information & Publicity at Ministry of Railways told FE Online that the poll will also be put up on the MyGov.in website. “We have put up the poll on Facebook, it will also be put up on MyGov.in, we will also ask the railways staff for their view. A final call on all the uniforms will be taken in the coming days. We plan to run this poll for around 15-20 days,” he said. Given that Railways will decide by early October, it seems likely that the new uniforms will see the light of the day by early next year.
FE Online has learnt that Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has expressed the desire that he would like the new uniforms to be made of khadi. However, a final call on the material of the uniforms is yet to be taken. In case the Indian Railways decides to go ahead with the option of khadi, this will be a big boost to PM Narendra Modi’s campaign to promote the handspun and hand-woven cloth.
The ‘Vibrant Soul of India’ theme draws inspiration from the Indian pop art. “Pop art is an interesting bridge between popular and mundane. Fusing everyday elements of culture, business, music and entertainment and transporting them onto clothing and embellishments is pop art,” the presentation made by Ritu Beri said. This theme uses the “brightest of colour palette” with greens and oranges & fuses them with navy blue & whites to create a “sober story” for the railways uniforms. The other three options that were up for the poll were; Ethos of India, The Golden Period, The Legacy of the Nawabs.
