In a first of its kind move, Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led Madhya Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposed law guaranteeing house or a piece of land for the landless families. “At today’s meeting, chaired by the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the cabinet has given its nod to the proposal of enactment of a law that would guarantee house or a piece of residential land to the poor sections of the society,” Minister for Public Relations Narottam Mishra said.

“The bill would be tabled in the state Assembly during the ongoing budget session,” Mishra said, adding that Madhya Pradesh would be the first state to enact such a law for the landless poor. There would be no shortage of public land for the implementation of this law, and if needed the government would purchase private land, he said in reply to a reporter’s question. The cabinet today also approved construction of 25,000 houses for the police personnel over the next five years, he said.

The decision is a booster to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of providing a house to every Indian by the year 2022. Modi, late last year launched his flagship housing scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojna’. Designed entirely for the rural masses, the ambitious scheme aims to provide affordable houses to all those living below the poverty line by the year 2022.

At the launch, Modi said that his government is dedicated to poor people and all its scheme is for them. “We launched Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna so that people can open bank account. Today I launched Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojna so that poor people can have a house,” said Modi.
