One of the biggest and crucial tax reforms in India, Goods and Services tax Bill was unanimously passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday, and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said that the passage of the Bill is ‘a good step for the country’. Gandhi said, “We earlier had three major differences on GST and we have worked that out. We still have an issue on the 18 percent cap, which will be discussed in December.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi went on to thank all political parties for their support. Arun Jaitley had earlier countered opposition’s questions on the Bill. He had also said that the draft bill during UPA government had many flaws which have been rectified now, and now it is moving towards an efficient system and a better federal structure of India.

Earlier last week Rahul Gandhi had met Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress’ leader in Lok Sabha, P Chindambaram, former Finance Minister and Anand Sharma, deputy leader Congress in Rajya Sabha to discuss many points regarding the GST legislation. After that Anand Sharma met Arun Jaitley to put across Congress’s point of view.

The GST Bill has been in the pipeline for more than 10 years and it contains an introduction of a single indirect tax structure for India.
