Keen on developing 1,100 islands and 300 lighthouses in order to tap their tourism potential, PM Narendra Modi has asked the shipping ministry to include these proposals in a cabinet note which was sent to him in connection with the development of inland waterways, road transport and highways and shipping minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday.
Addressing a national conference on inland waterways, Gadkari said the ministry would issue tenders inviting expression of interests from private parties for developing the islands and lighthouses as potential tourist hotspots.
Everything would be through a transparent tender process only, he said. “The PM has asked us to include the proposal to develop 300 lighthouses and 1,100 islands in a Cabinet note we sent him in connection with developing waterways,” Gadkari said.
Around Rs 50,000 crore investment would be made to develop these waterways over the next 3-4 years aimed at ensuring smooth and cheaper transportation and creating job opportunities apart from promoting tourism, he said.
The Bill to convert 101 rivers into waterways would be tabled in the next session of Parliament and taking cue from the pick-up in PPP model in the road sector, the route is likely to be replicated for the development of these waterways, he indicated. “We are studying whether the development of inland waterways through the PPP route is feasible or not. My personal opinion is that it is possible,” Gadkari said.
