Foodgrains: Gujarat turns first state to go cashless, Ram Vilas Paswan lauds success

In order to establish the identities of beneficiaries of National Food Security Act of 2013 and to stop the leakage of grains at the shop level, beneficiaries under the NFSA will only need to carry their Aadhaar cards for purchasing foodgrains in the state.

As Gujarat becomes the first state to go cashless for the distribution of foodgrains, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan congratulated the Government of Gujarat for establishing the cashless system in the state. The state government had targeted March 31 for the installation of Aadhaar enabled payment systems in 17, 250 FPSs but achieved much before date according to the reports of The Pioneer.

In order to establish the identities of beneficiaries of National Food Security Act of 2013 and to stop the leakage of grains at the shop level, beneficiaries under the NFSA will only need to carry their Aadhaar cards for purchasing foodgrains in the state. This is being done to eradicate corruption in the Public Distribution System. Gujarat has also taken a step ahead by partnering with the Ministry of Electronics and IT’s common purpose vehicle and offered 30 odd digital services through FPSs.

With the help of FPSs, consumers will now be able to get their air, rail and bus tickets.Beneficiariess can now pay their mobile bill, farmers can deposit crop insurance premium, etc at these centres. The state governmnet is also trying for a provision for monthly bus passe for students and also for the payment of electricity bill. There are over 81 crore beneficiaries under NFSA and the cashless system in PDS will become the larget system after its implementation.
