Demonetisation: Indian Railways trains, metro tickets cannot be bought with old Rs 500 notes from Saturday

From Saturday, passengers travelling by trains also can’t pay for catering services using the high value notes.

Bringing an end to month-long relaxation in use of old notes and coinciding with new incentives announced for digital payments, the government has announced that old Rs 500 notes can’t henceforth be used to buy tickets for travelling by railways, state transport buses, and suburban and metro rail services. From Saturday, passengers travelling by trains also can’t pay for catering services using the high value notes.

The ministry said the use of R500 notes have come down in the past few days. On November 25, the government had banned payments for the transactions under all the exempted categories through R1,000 notes. The government on Thursday unveiled several incentives for digital transactions.
