The growth in the internet will now come from mobile users. Telecom companies are pumping in a significant amount of money for spectrum and rolling infrastructure like broadband pipes across the country. As the debate over net neutrality rages, it is crucial that telecom companies make the best use of the spectrum.

Supporters of net neutrality—the term was coined back in 2002 by Columbia University law professor Tim Wu—have taken the web by storm writing to the country’s telecom regulator, which has come out with a consultation paper ahead of formulating guidelines on the matter. They are of the opinion that if telecom companies are allowed to charge more for certain applications and services, it will effectively tilt the balance in
favour of the bigger players and potentially stifle innovation and growth in start-ups.

The government should consult all stakeholders and take an informed decision so that it turns out to be a win-win situation for all.
