Core sector growth strengthens at 6.4% in March versus 5.7% in February

The combined Index of Eight Core Industries stands at 188.0 in March, 2016, which is 6.4 % higher compared to the index of March, 2015.

The eight core industries comprise make up almost 38% of the weight of items included in the index of industrial production (IIP).

In a sign of strengthening revival, the core sector growth picked up pace in March at 6.4% versus 5.7% in February. “The combined Index of Eight Core Industries stands at 188.0 in March, 2016, which is 6.4 % higher compared to the index of March, 2015. Its cumulative growth during April to March, 2015-16 was 2.7%,” said Ministry of Commerce & Industry release.

Coal production increased by 1.7% in March 2016 over March last year. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2015-16 increased by 4.6 % over corresponding period of previous year.

Crude Oil production decreased by 5.1% in March 2016 over March, 2015. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2015-16 decreased by 1.4 % over the corresponding period of previous year.

While the cement sector output growth was reported at 11.9% versus 13.5% in February, the fertiliser output growth rose to 22.9% versus 16.3% in February.
