Consumer sentiments drop, unemployment rate in India up in March: CMIE

Consumer sentiments in India dropped in March, having recorded a second straight month of fall, while the unemployment rate rose from previous month, various new indices released by CMIE on Monday revealed.

shopping-Re-G1660These indices on consumer sentiments, expectations and economic conditions take into account perceptions of over 39,600 households over a 30-day period, the CMIE said. They are created in collaboration with Institute for Social Research, Survey Research Center of University of Michigan, US.

The index of consumer sentiments in March declined to 98.11, down 2.2% from February and 5.3% from January. At 97.42, the index of consumer expectations in March dipped 3.4% from February level and 5% from January level. The index of current economic conditions in March dropped to 99.19, 1.5% lower than February and 4.3% than January.

However, as of April 3, the indices seem to have inched up a bit from the average March level, with the index of consumer sentiments touching 102.4 and that of consumer expectations hitting 101.3. The index of current economic conditions touched 104.2.

All these indices were computed with a base in September-December 2015, the CMIE (Centre For Monitoring Indian Economy) said. They were lower than their base values (100) in March.

Meanwhile, unemployment rate in the country touched 8.42% in March, higher than 7.98% recorded in the previous month, though it was still lower than 8.72% in January, according to a separate CMIE index.
