Union mines minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Friday sought help from states to enhance the contribution of the sector to the country’s economy, which is currently at 2.5%.

Chairing a national meet of mines ministers here, Tomar also asked the states to take mineral exploration initiatives as it would lead to more mining and result in employment generation and economic growth.

“States must make efforts to ensure that mining leases granted before the MMDR Amendment get forest and environment clearances by the January 2017 deadline to prevent lapsing of leases,” he said.

The minister also asked states to set up district mineral foundations at the earliest.
