A central team headed by joint coal secretary SK Singh on Saturday met UP chief secretary Alok Ranjan and assured the state of restoring coal supply soon to all generating plants as per their linkage agreements.
The team was supposed to accompany Union minister of state for power and coal Piyush Goyal in his meeting with UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday, to discuss issues regarding the acute power crisis in the state, but was cancelled at the last moment, apparently due to the hectic political activity regarding Sunday’s Cabinet expansion at the Centre.
“The central team also assured us that the coal linkage for the 13,200 MW Karchana power project in Allahabad would soon be transferred to UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam along with clearing of hurdles related to granting coal linkages for Ghatampur, Meja and Lalitpur projects.
The progress of all these projects, which have a combined generating capacity of 5,000 MW, has been affected despite all agreements being in place, due to lack of coal linkages,” an official said on condition of anonymity.
On the issue of delinking environmental clearance from coal linkage, which has been hampering the 1,980MW Ghatampur project, the central team said the delinking was a policy decision and it should be taken up soon on a priority basis.
