Billionaire founder of Microsoft Corporation Bill Gates has an advice for the US President Donald Trump – “ Don’t cut foreign aid as people in other countries will die as a result, and Americans will be worse off.” Bill Gates was answering top ten questions, along with his wife Melinda, for the tenth edition of the Gates Foundation’s annual letter. The couple took a different approach this time, unlike all the past years, answering the most asked questions from them. On being asked, “How are President Trump’s policies affecting your foundation’s work?,” Bill Gates replied that he is very often asked this question. Adding further Bill Gates said that the policies framed by the US administration affects the work of their foundation in a number of areas and foreign aid stands at the top of the list.
The foreign aid helps in saving lots of lives and America has been a leader in the fighting disease and poverty all across the world. Not only foreign aid helps in saving precious human lives, it also creates many jobs in the US. It automatically helps in securing the health of the Americans that can be adversely affected due to disease outbreaks and it’s better to stop them before they become pandemics. Cutting down on foreign investments will only be worse for the American people, he opined.
Donald Trump has always proposed big cuts to foreign aid given by the US. In budget 2018-19, the government doubled down on last year’s proposals to cut foreign aid. It’s in the best interests of the Americans to remain engaged with the rest of the world, Bill Gates said. Global engagement is always a smart investment, he added further. There are more disagreements with the current US administration that ever had been before, but working together is still important whenever possible, Bill Gates expressed. Answering the same question Melinda Gates said, “We need to work with the administration to garner as much support as we can for policies that will benefit the most impoverished people in the world.”
