The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Thursday witnessed uproar over the denial of special category status to the state. Opposition YSR Congress members stalled proceedings and demanded a discussion on special package announced by the Centre for Andhra Pradesh.

Amidst noisy scenes, a resolution supporting the Constitution Amendment Bill on Goods and Services Tax (GST) was passed. Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu backed the GST Bill saying that it would be beneficial to both the Centre and state. Union finance minister Arun Jaitley announced a financial package for Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday night. The package, valid for five years from 2015 to 2020, revolves around various sections in the AP Reorganisation Act, the 14th Finance Commission report recommendations, oral commitment made by the then prime minister in February 2014 and the recommendations made by the Niti Aayog in 2015.
