The Maharashtra government has taken a big step toward improving road connectivity in the eastern part of the state. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved a proposal to secure a loan from Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) for land acquisition for three major expressway projects.

The three expressways included in the plan are Nagpur–Gondia, Bhandara–Gadchiroli, and Nagpur–Chandrapur. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee held on 23 April at Mantralaya in Mumbai

Financial and Administrative approvals for Expressways land acquisition

Under the chairmanship of Devendra Fadnavis, the committee approved funding for land acquisition through HUDCO borrowing. These funds will mainly be used for acquiring land needed to build the highways.

The government has cleared:

  • ₹3,162.18 crore for the Nagpur–Gondia expressway
  • ₹931.15 crore for the Bhandara–Gadchiroli expressway
  • ₹2,353.94 crore for administrative costs of the Nagpur–Chandrapur expressway

Project planning and execution responsibilities for Expressways

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will be responsible for the execution and planning of the three expressways. Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing detailed work schedules
  • Issuing tenders for various project components
  • Finalising contracts with selected implementing agencies

MSRDC will also work closely with the Finance Department to fast-track approval of the HUDCO loan.

MSRDC to prepare a detailed project timeline for all 3 Expressways

The Maharashtra Government has instructed the MSRDC to prepare a comprehensive implementation roadmap for all three expressways. This timeline will cover the entire project lifecycle, from initial planning stages to completion.

Benefits of new Expressways for commuters in Eastern Maharashtra

Improved travel efficiency and regional connectivity

The upcoming expressways are expected to significantly improve travel efficiency and regional accessibility in eastern Maharashtra.

Faster connectivity between key districts

By reducing travel time between key districts such as Nagpur, Gondia, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur, the projects will make long-distance road travel faster and more convenient for commuters.

Reduced traffic congestion on existing highways

Better road infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce congestion on existing highways by providing wider and more efficient routes for traffic. This will help ease traffic jams, especially during peak travel hours, and ensure a smoother and continuous flow of vehicles.

Boost to the local economy and employment

The expressway projects are also expected to encourage economic growth by improving trade, attracting investment, and generating employment opportunities in construction and allied sectors.
