If you frequently travel through the Gurugram-Jaipur section of National Highway 48 (NH-48) and often find yourself stuck in long queues at toll plazas, there is some good news. The entire 270-km corridor will move toward a barrier-free tolling system starting August 1, allowing vehicles to cross toll points without stopping to pay.
According to The Indian Express, the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system at the Shahjahanpur toll plaza in Rajasthan is expected to become operational on Saturday. The MLFF system is already operational at Daulatpura and Manoharpura toll plazas on NH-48. Shahjahanpur was the final toll plaza on the Gurugram-Jaipur route where the system was yet to be introduced.
How MLFF Tolling System work?
Under the Multi Lane Free Flow system, vehicles can pass through toll points without slowing down or stopping. High-performance Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras detect the vehicle’s FASTag and registration number.
The toll amount is then deducted automatically, reducing waiting time at toll plazas and helping improve traffic flow. The system is designed to reduce congestion near toll gates and lower vehicle emissions.
Kukrola to join MLFF Network
According to The Indian Express, officials said that the Delhi-Jaipur stretch of NH-48 will also move towards a complete barrier-free tolling system after the MLFF system is implemented at the Kukrola toll plaza. The Kukrola toll plaza, which shifted from Kherki Daula, will further expand the MLFF network on NH-48. Once operational, it will enable automated toll collection across the corridor.
MLFF Expansion beyond NH-48
The report further stated that the barrier-free tolling system is expanding to more highways across the country. At present, MLFF is operational at five toll plazas, including Choryasi on NH-48 in Gujarat, Mundka on UER-II in Delhi, Gharaunda on NH-44 in Haryana, and Manoharpura and Daulatpura on NH-48 in Rajasthan.
The Indian Highways Management Company Ltd (IHMCL), which manages tolling implementation for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has also awarded contracts for introducing MLFF at 12 more toll plazas across states such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam and Haryana.
