The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project has received a major boost with the awarding of a significant contract for modern rolling stock. In a post on ‘X’ K-RIDE wrote Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has been awarded a direct contract worth Rs. 1,513.75 crore by Bengaluru Integrated Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises Ltd (Bi-RIDE), a subsidiary of K-RIDE. Under the contract ICF will manufacture and supply 153 metro-like air-conditioned coaches for the suburban rail project.
153 Metro-Style Coaches
ICF will design, manufacture, test, integrate, and commission 51 train sets, each comprising three coaches. These coaches are specifically earmarked for Corridor 2 and Corridor 4 of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project. Deliveries are scheduled to commence within the next 18 months to align with the planned phased launch of services.
Lakshman Singh, Managing Director of Bi-RIDE and K-RIDE, stated that the new train sets will feature metro-style interiors and modern passenger amenities tailored for daily urban commuting. The introduction of these coaches is aimed at providing faster, more comfortable, and reliable travel options for Bengaluru’s residents.
Focus on Key Corridors
The new fleet will primarily serve two important corridors of the suburban rail network. Corridor 2, also known as the Mallige Line, will run between Benniganahalli and Chikkabanavara. Corridor 4 will connect Heelalige to Rajankunte.
Once operational, these corridors are expected to significantly ease Bengaluru’s chronic traffic congestion by offering a fast, efficient, and high-capacity alternative to road transport. The project is also anticipated to strengthen connectivity between residential neighbourhoods, business districts, and major railway hubs across the city.
Project Background and Recent Developments
The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project was approved in 2020 with the objective of transforming the city’s public transportation landscape. However, the project has faced repeated delays due to challenges related to land acquisition, tender processes, and infrastructure development.
Earlier plans to lease coaches from private operators did not materialise, prompting the Karnataka government to opt for direct procurement from ICF. Officials view the latest order as a crucial step towards accelerating the project and ensuring that modern train services are ready once track and station infrastructure work is completed.
The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Network is expected to play a vital role in the city’s future urban mobility, offering a much-needed mass transit solution for one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas.
