Steel tycoon Lakshmi N Mittal announced the passing of his father earlier this week, triggering an outpouring of condolence messages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered Mohan Lal Mittal for his work, values, and services to society.
In a statement, Lakshmi Mittal stated that his “beloved father” passed away peacefully on Thursday evening in London, surrounded by family. He mentioned that Mohan Lal Mittal was only a few moments short of his 100th birthday. He remembered him as “an extraordinary man”, Lakshmi Mittal stated that his father’s strong religious faith and work ethic remained with him throughout life. My father was an extraordinary man, whose strong religious belief and work ethic stayed with him his whole life,” he added.
PM Modi’s condolence message
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the death and wrote that Mohan Lal Mittal “distinguished himself” in the world of industry and also had a deep connection with India’s culture.
“Shri Mohan Lal Mittal Ji distinguished himself in the world of industry. At the same time, he was very passionate about Indian culture. He supported various philanthropic efforts, reflecting his passion for societal progress. Pained by his passing. I will cherish our various interactions. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi stated in a post on X.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal also offered his condolences, saying, “Saddened by the demise of Shri Mohan Lal Mittal ji…His resilience and philanthropic activities will continue to inspire generations.”
Who was Mohan Lal Mittal?
In his tribute message, Lakshmi Mital shared details of his father’s early life and the qualities he was known for within his family. He mentioned that Mohan Lal Mittal was born into a modest family in Rajgarh village in Rajasthan, as per a report by PTI. He studied hard in school and developed a strong interest in commerce. Lakshmi Mittal described him as a “natural entrepreneur” with a vision ahead of his time. He also encouraged the family to be bold and look beyond what felt safe. He also further added that he continued to speak of his father’s guidance throughout his life, and even in his last days, his mental strength never wavered.” He also spoke about Mohan Lal Mittal’s deep focus on family, saying he is survived by five children, 11 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Summing up the family’s loss, Laksmi Mittal stated. “We all love him, miss him deeply, and also we celebrate his extraordinary, very full-circle life and his considerable legacy.”

ArcelorMittal, led by Lakshmi Mittal, also issued an official condolence note, stating Mohan Lal Mittal believed in building businesses with “integrity, purpose and responsibility to society”—principles the company said continue to guide it today. The company further added that beyond business, he was a devoted family man admired for “humility, wisdom, and compassion” and would be deeply missed.
