The Economic Survey for FY26 is set to be tabled during the Budget Session of Parliament tomorrow, January 29. The Budget session is beginning today, on January 28, and will continue until April 2.

India’s Economic Survey is one of the most important annual documents released by the Government of India ahead of the Union Budget. Union Budget is scheduled to be presented on February 1 by Finance Minster Nirmala Sitharaman

Economic Survey to be tabled during Budget Session tomorrow

The Survey summarises the state of the economy, providing insights into major macroeconomic trends, growth trajectories, and sectoral performance. It also helps shape discussions and expectations before India’s main financial statement is presented.

The Survey will be presented in both Houses of Parliament by the Chief Economic Adviser (CEA). This will be followed by a press briefing, during which senior finance ministry officials will explain the key findings and economic trends outlined in the document.

Four key factors to watch includes-

  • Real GDP growth projection of FY26
  • Prices & inflation
  • Performance of banking, agriculture and other sectors
  • Export and services strength

Economic Survey projections vs actual GDP growth

India’s actual economic growth has often outperformed Economic Survey projections in recent years.

For 2025-26, the economy is expected to grow 7.4%(as per First Advance Estimates of GDP), higher than the 6.3–6.8% growth projected in the pre-Budget Survey.

For 2024-25, economic growth stood at 6.5%, broadly in line with the Survey’s projection of 6.5–7%.

In 2023-24, GDP growth came in at 9.2%, significantly above the Survey’s projection of 6–6.8%.

What is the Economic Survey and why is it important?

The Economic Survey is an annual report prepared by the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance and guided by the Chief Economic Adviser. It evaluates economic developments over the past fiscal year and reviews key macroeconomic indicators such as GDP growth, inflation, and sectoral trends, along with broader issues including health, education, and employment.

Economists and market watchers closely track the Economic Survey, as it helps set the economic narrative ahead of the Union Budget announcement.
