Ashok Leyland (AL) is targeting a 25% market share in the light commercial vehicles (LCV) segment. The company plans to achieve this by launching new products and expanding its dealership network in growth markets, particularly in Western India.
This year, AL intends to introduce new passenger LCVs and expand its offerings in the goods segment, an area where it currently lacks presence. This includes entering the bio-fuel segment (CNG plus petrol) in FY27, which is in demand in states like Gujarat and Maharashtra. AL’s market share is at 20%.
GST Rationalization
Viplav Shah, head of the LCV Business at Ashok Leyland, noted that the LCV industry is expected to finish FY26 with sales of 6,40,000 units, reflecting a 9-10% growth, driven by GST cuts. The LCV industry experienced a modest growth of 0.8% during the April-September 2025 period, but following the GST reductions, it surged by 20.3% between October 2025 and January 2026.
According to Shah, Ashok Leyland saw an 8.2% increase in sales before the GST cuts and a substantial 29.9% growth afterwards. The industry’s 10-year Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) has been between 6-8%, with the passenger LCV segment projected to reach approximately 50,000 units. AL expects to finish the year with around 70,000 units sold.
LCVs comprise about 50-55% of the truck market in India, with Tata Motors, Mahindra, and Ashok Leyland as the leading players. Following the 87-day festival period, demand has remained robust. Shah mentioned that there is a growing fundamental appetite for LCVs, projecting that the market will continue to grow at 7-8% in the long term. There has also been an increase in the market share of organised players and fleet operators over the past 10-15 years, rising from 5% to 40%.
Western India Strategy
In Western India, Ashok Leyland is intensifying its efforts to capture market share. Currently, AL’s LCV business provides service every 35 km with plans to improve this to every 25 km. The company has 29 dealer partners and operates 130 service workshops in the region.
