The Maharashtra government has announced a public holiday on January 15, 2026, in Mumbai to facilitate local body elections. All banks, public offices, and central and state government offices will remain closed on the day within the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation limits.

The holiday has been declared under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. This holiday applies to all 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts, which fall under the jurisdiction of the BMC. 

Is NSE/BSE open on January 15?

The National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange have announced January 15 as a trading holiday in the capital market segment due to the Municipal Corporation Election. There will be no trading on the day. 

The stock exchange will also remain closed on January 26 due to the national holiday of Republic Day.

Bank holiday in other cities on January 15

According to the Reserve Bank of India, banks will also remain closed in the Belapur and Nagpur regions of Maharashtra, in addition to the Mumbai region. 

In addition to the Maharashtra cities, banks will also remain closed in Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Vijayawada on January 15 due to Uttarayana Punyakala, Pongal, Maghe Sankranti, and Makara Sankranti.

Other bank holidays in January

On January 16, due to the festivals of Thiruvalluvar Day and Kanuma, banks in Chennai and Vijayawada will remain closed.

On January 17, Banks across the country will continue their regular operations, as it falls on a third Saturday. However, banks in Chennai will remain closed to mark Uzhavar Thirunal.

On January 23, banks will be closed in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata due to the Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Saraswati Puja (Shree Panchami), Vir Surendrasai Jayanti and Basanta Panchami. 

It is essential to note that while physical bank branches may be closed, customers can continue to use their online banking services without interruption. Furthermore, ATMs will continue to operate according to their normal schedule and timings.

Additionally, banks will continue to follow their usual weekly closure schedule. Financial institutions will remain shut across the country on Sundays- January 11, 18, and 25, as well as on the second and fourth Saturdays, January 10 and 24.
