Planning a trip to the United Kingdom in 2026 or later? There is a new rule Americans need to know about and it affects almost everyone, even people who are just changing planes.

Starting January 8, 2026, US citizens traveling to the UK will need special permission before they go. This new system is called the UK ETA, and it marks the end of last-minute, visa-free travel to Britain for Americans.

A simple change

US citizens will now need a UK ETA whether they are visiting for tourism, work, business meetings, or even just passing through a UK airport on the way to another country. This same date also applies to travelers from nearly 50 other countries, including Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Brazil.

What exactly is the UK ETA?

Think of the UK ETA as a digital “yes, you may travel” slip. ETA stands for Electronic Travel Authorization. It works much like the US ESTA system. Travellers apply online, share basic details, and wait for approval before boarding a plane.

Once approved, the ETA is linked to the passport. It allows travel to all parts of the UK, including England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the UK ’s British overseas territories.

The ETA lasts two years, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and can be used for multiple trips. The cost is £16 (around $22) for every traveler, including children.

Who needs it?

Most US passport holders will need an ETA if they plan to travel to or transit through the UK and do not already have a UK visa, a British or Irish passport, or legal residency in the UK or the Republic of Ireland. People who already need a visa under existing rules will still need one and should not apply for an ETA.

Transit rules can be confusing, but the guidance is clear. Travellers do not need an ETA if they stay inside the airport and do not pass through border control. But if they leave the main terminal, collect and recheck bags, stay overnight, or fly out the next day, they will pass through border control and will need an ETA. If it is unclear, the UK government advises travellers to check directly with their airline.

No ETA, no flight

This new rule ends decades of easy, spontaneous travel for Americans flying to or through the UK. Travellers who arrive at the airport without an approved ETA risk being denied boarding, even if the UK is just a stopover. There is a short “grace period” until February 25, 2026. During this time, enforcement will be lighter. But after that date, airlines and other carriers must check for an approved ETA before departure. No ETA means no boarding pass.

How to apply for UK ETA?

Applications must be submitted online through the UK government’s official website or through the UK ETA app, which is available on Google Play and the App Store. The UK government says most people receive a decision within minutes, but travellers are advised to apply at least three working days in advance, just in case.

UK is not alone in this move. Australia and New Zealand have required electronic travel authorizations for years. Brazil recently brought back electronic visas for US citizens. South Korea has temporarily waived its own system for Americans until the end of 2026. The European Union is also preparing a similar program, expected to launch in late 2026. Governments want travellers checked before arrival, not after.
