The Tata Sons board is scheduled to meet on September 17, people with knowledge of the matter said. This will be the first formal board meeting after chairman N. Chandrasekaran communicated his wish not to be considered for reappointment at the end of his current term in February 2027.
Those in the know said that while this is a scheduled meeting that would have taken place irrespective of the events at the August 18 annual general meeting (AGM), the board could discuss new dates for the adjourned AGM as well as Chandrasekaran’s August 12 communiqué.
Before the Tata Sons board meets, however, the Trusts are scheduled to meet in the second week of September—most likely on September 11. The agenda, though, will hinge on the actions of the Charity Commissioner of Maharashtra, the public trusts authority, which has barred Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) from convening meetings while it investigates allegations of governance lapses filed by advocate Katyayani Agrawal.
The Tata Sons AGM was adjourned for lack of quorum since SRTT could not participate in the nomination of a joint representative with the other key promoter trust, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT). Under the Tata Sons Articles of Association, a joint representative nominated by SRTT and SDTT is a must to achieve quorum at an AGM.
Even before that, SRTT is headed for a hearing on September 8 in the matter of allegations filed by former trustee Mehli Mistry. Mistry, through multiple objections filed with the charity commissioner’s office, has alleged governance lapses at SRTT, SDTT and the Bai Hirabai Jamsetji Tata Navsari Charitable Institution. This hearing is separate from the investigation that resulted in the ban on SRTT meetings.
