Samsung launched its next-generation Galaxy flagships – Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ betting its money on the ‘reimagined’ cameras that it has laid much emphasis to. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ came out the stars of the Mobile World Congress 2018 held in Barcelona, and in India where they were launched more recently. As one of the key areas of focus was the new and improved, dual aperture camera on both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, the scrutiny on its performance has to be tight. Enter, DxO Mark, the platform that judges camera performance and provides a rating for the smartphones.
Last year, it was Google Pixel 2 which earned the top spot with a rating of 98! That was the highest ever rated given to a smartphone by the platform. But after the sequence of testing on various parameters such as photo and video and their behaviour on exposure, contrast, colour, and many more factors on the Samsung Galaxy S9+, the newest flagship has got the top spot with a rating of 99, surpassing the ones scored by iPhone X and Pixel 2.
With this, Samsung’s newest entry has run past the last year’s one of the best smartphone cameras, the Google Pixel 2 and another popular flagship the iPhone X. Apple’s iPhone X got 97 on the DxO mark rating.
How DxO mark rating works is that they test the camera performance on a smartphone camera. As many as 1500 images are shot under various modes, lighting conditions, and weather conditions to test the camera performance. As much as 2 hours of video recording is done in both indoors and outdoors to test the video capabilities.
On DxO Mark rating, Samsung Galaxy S9+ got a Photo score of 104 and scored 91 on the video recording capability.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ Camera Specifications
There has been a lot many improvements done on the Samsung Galaxy S9 compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy S8. The primary lens on this one is a 12-megapixel shooter. This is the camera which supports the dual aperture system. It has a f/1.5 aperture for low light conditions and a secondary f/2.4 aperture as standard. The sensor on this camera is 1/2.55-inch!
The secondary camera on the Samsung Galaxy S9+ is a 12-megapixel shooter that has a fixed f/2.4 aperture and gets a 1/3.6-inch sensor. Both the cameras are supported by Optical Image Stabilisation system (OIS) and get an LED flash. The camera on the Galaxy S9 Plus gets dual PDAF and can record video in 4K at a smooth 60 frames-per-second. But one of the stellar features of the Galaxy S9+ camera is the super-slow-motion video which is recorded at an astounding 960fps, but the caveat is that it records in 720p.
