Amazon on Thursday announced an additional investment of $13 billion in India by 2030 to expand its artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure. The new commitment increases the company’s total planned investment in India to $48 billion over the next five years.

The announcement came after Amazon chief executive officer Andy Jassy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. Following the meeting, Jassy said Amazon remained committed to expanding its presence in India and supporting the country’s technology ecosystem.

Prime Minister Modi said Amazon’s commitment would support jobs and strengthen India’s position as a global investment destination. “A great meeting with Mr. Andy Jassy. I welcome Amazon’s record $48 billion investment in India. This will create new opportunities for our youth. At the same time, it shows the growing interest across the world to invest in India!” he wrote.

Details of investment

Andy Jassy said Amazon would invest $48 billion in India between 2026 and 2030. This includes an additional $13 billion over its earlier plan of $35 billion. He said the company had already invested about $40 billion in India since 2010.

Jassy said the new investment would focus heavily on artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure. He said more than $21 billion would go into AI and cloud systems as demand rises in India’s digital economy.

He added that Amazon aimed to support 3.8 million jobs by 2030 and enable $80 billion in e-commerce exports from India.

He also said Amazon planned to bring AI benefits to 15 million small businesses and 4 million government school students. The company linked these targets to its broader strategy of expanding digital services in India.

Why is India central to Amazon’s global strategy?

Amazon said India had become one of its fastest-growing markets, driven by rapid growth in online shopping, cloud adoption and digital services. The company said rising demand from businesses and government institutions had pushed it to scale up investments.

Jassy said India had emerged as a major hub for cloud computing and artificial intelligence. He said Amazon Web Services would expand data centre capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad to meet future demand.

“A fair amount of our investment is in our marketplace business, but the incremental $13 billion we announced today is focused on cloud and AI,” Jassy said. He said India’s growth in digital infrastructure made it a key focus for long-term expansion.

He also praised India’s policy direction and development progress under Prime Minister Modi, saying the country had become important in global technology and business networks.

Amazon said its total investment in India from 2010 to 2030 would exceed $88 billion. This includes spending on e-commerce operations, logistics, cloud infrastructure and technology development.

The company said the investment would support both economic growth and digital inclusion across India, as competition among global tech firms intensifies in AI and cloud computing sectors.
