Low-cost carrier Air India Express is gearing up for a significant expansion in its flight operations, aiming to increase its flights by 40% in the upcoming fiscal year. Sources aware of the development revealed that this ambitious plan is underpinned by a strategic fleet expansion initiative.

While unveiling its growth strategy, the airline emphasised a concerted effort towards consolidating its presence on domestic routes, with minimal additions to destinations. However, the international network might witness a slight expansion, according to sources.

Presently, Air India Express boasts a fleet of 69 planes and operates 350 daily flights. The airline is also in possession of a skilled workforce, comprising approximately 1,300 pilots, including those from AirAsia India, alongside a substantial number undergoing training.

New flight routes to be introduced

In line with its expansion agenda, Air India Express is set to introduce new flight routes to Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka during the forthcoming summer schedule.

Furthermore, the company is on track to fulfill its order of acquiring 50 white tail Boeing 737 Max planes by December this year, with around 13-14 aircraft already inducted into its fleet.

AirAsia India and AI Express merger?

Additionally, there are speculations regarding the merger of AirAsia India with Air India Express, expected to be completed by the second quarter of the upcoming fiscal year. This merger is anticipated to consolidate Air India Express’s position further, with plans to incorporate AirAsia India’s fleet under its air operator permit by July-August this year.

As of now, Air India Express has three A320neo planes from AirAsia India’s fleet operating under its air operator permit, marking significant progress towards the impending merger.
