Air India on Saturday publicly announced the cancellation of all its flights to and from New York and Newark on January 25 (Sunday) and 26 (Monday). The cancellations were made following the forecast of a severe winter storm across the US East Coast.

In a post on X, the airline said that the select flights have been cancelled as heavy snowfall is expected in New York, New Jersey and adjoining regions from early Sunday through Monday.

The Tata group-operated airline also issued a travel advisory for all passengers travelling to New York and Newmark in the coming days and laid out ticket based grievance redressal mechanisms. The decision, it added, was taken in the interest of passenger and crew safety.

What did Air India say?

In its latest post, Air India briefed the passengers about re-booking and re-scheduling options that they can exercise to retain their travel booking to New York or NewMark.

“In view of the safety, well-being and convenience of our passengers and crew, all Air India flights to and from New York and Newark have been cancelled on 25 and 26 January,” the airline said.

Through its latest post, Air India assured affected passengers that its teams are on standby to provide assistance, including support with rebooking and other travel-related arrangements and advised passengers to stay updated with the latest events.

What to do if your flight has been cancelled?

AirIndia has advised affected passengers to get in touch with airline staff through helplines to explore rebooking, alternate flights, or refund options based on their needs.

Passengers have also been advised to keep their boarding pass and payment receipts safe, as they may be required later to claim refunds or compensation under DGCA passenger rights.

US Weather update: Big winter storm expected on east cost

Two-thirds of the US population is reportedly set to face a monster winter storm in the coming days accompanied by extreme cold. As per a CNN report, state meteorologists expect the storm’s snow and ice will stretch over 2,000 miles from Texas to New England as it moves east through the weekend.

Owing to this development, thousands of flights have already been cancelled ahead of the storm, with travel on roads across the storm’s footprint said to be near impossible. As per CNN the strom is also expected to affect power lines across states with hundreds of thousands may lose power for a day.
